Bear's Sonic Journals: Live at The Carousel Ballroom, 4/24/1968

A couple weeks before he released At Folsom Prison in May 1968, Johnny Cash performed a long, rowdy set at San Francisco’s now-defunct Carousel Ballroom, a venue that soon became the famed, also-defunct Fillmore West. Owlsley Stanley—known for, among many other feats and exploits, his roles as a sound engineer for the Grateful Dead and as one of Ken Kesey’s “Merry Pranksters”—recorded the set, which captures both Cash at the height of his performance prowess and the heady, freewheeling vibe of the Haight-Ashbury counterculture scene. Until now locked in Cash’s vault, this recording was unearthed by his son, John Carter Cash, who, alongside the Owlsley Stanley Foundation, compiled the set into what’s sure to be a new live classic for Cash fans. Tracks include favorites like “The Long Black Veil,” “Jackson,” and “Ring of Fire.”
