Fitness: Yoga, August 2022 (DJ Mix)

Here, producer ford. (aka Utah’s Luc Bradford) tells Apple Music about his special Fitness mix for yoga, and highlights a couple favorite tracks. "I really wanted to make a mix that paid homage to music that has been a great source of respite over the years. In high school, I often ended up falling asleep to Brian Eno, Jon Hopkins, William Basinski—and it had a lasting impact on how I approached writing music and the sounds that I generally gravitated towards when I was starting off. It was really nice to revisit those songs and stitch it together in a way that felt meaningful to me and brought me back to that place. I find that music like this has become more and more necessary over recent years, and I hope that anyone who listens can find themselves in that similar state of mental solitude that these songs put me in. I really wanted to find ways of exploring different sounds that put me in a certain meditative state while still building energy throughout the entirety of the mix in a manner that felt in line with a full-flow exercise. I knew I wanted to bookend the entirety of the mix with moments that allowed you to center your breath and really focus. Having that chance to explore ways in which you can subtly build energy in a mix was really refreshing. Personally, I don’t have a great fitness routine myself—oops—but I do really enjoy breathing exercises and cold-water immersion/cold therapy, so I hope anyone listening can find different applications for this mix!" Nala Sinephro, “Space 1” "I have a very distinct memory of hearing this song for the first time. We’d spent the day in the mountains and were driving out of the mouth of Provo Canyon in Utah when this song came on in some mix I was listening through. I remember how much it caught me off guard in that moment. Something about the setting and where I was mentally at the time just clicked with the music, which was a really comforting feeling for me. The song is meticulously crafted but spacious at the same time, and I always catch something new every time I listen. It’s really nice when songs are able to take you out of a moment like that. In that same vein, I wanted to bring it into the mix in contrast with a more energetic moment to highlight how powerful music like that can be when you give it room to breathe." Jon Hopkins, “Immunity (with King Creosote)” "I’ve always considered the original version of this song to be one of my favorite songs of all time. I think I was about 14 or 15 when Hopkins put out the Asleep Versions, and to hear someone reinterpret their own music in such a refreshing and unique way left a big impression on me at the time and even influenced the way I approached my own alternative versions of my music down the line. This song takes the original and strips it down to its core elements while simultaneously putting them under a microscope and expanding on each component. Being as this has always been a very grounding song for me, I knew I wanted to close the mix with it."
