Travel - EP

Densely woven arrangements and evocative wordplay set Future of Forestry apart from standard-issue Christian acts. Primarily a vehicle for singer/instrumentalist Eric Owyoung, FoF advances creatively with Travel. On this six-song EP, familiar worship music themes are given a unique personal slant, thanks to Owyoung’s visionary songwriting and widescreen production ideas. Travel’s thematic motif of pioneering flight is sustained in sometimes indirect but still-discernable ways. A bit of U2-like dreaminess shimmers within “Traveler’s Song” and “Colors In Array,” while “Closer to Me” harkens back to the symphonic grandeur of the Moody Blues. When he chooses, Owyoung can craft a luminous hosanna of praise, as “Hallelujah” shows. But what distinguishes his work most is the confluence of interior musing and devotional poetry found in his lyrics. “Close Your Eyes” is a meditation upon faith and family, offering a glimpse of when “Jesus was still a son like you.” With striking images and high-flown music, Travel takes creative risks that pay off handsomely.
