“Everyone loves disco,” Trixie Mattel tells Apple Music. “At a time where the world is most divided around drag, I believe disco is healing magic that unites us all.” With that in mind, the drag queen and prolific singer-songwriter has bottled the bouncy plasticine essence of her inaugural touring party Solid Pink Disco for this Pride mix, which features some of the tracks she compiled as the party’s scaffolding. Beyond that crowd-pleasing disco core, Mattel populates the mix with “bitch tracks and c**ty gay music” to create the layered sonic equivalent of Solid Pink Disco’s signature aesthetic. “Bold, fabulous, and extremely gay,” she says. “Saturated hues of magenta and glittering lights of a fuchsia mirror ball.” Cue crafty extrapolations of club-friendly hits by The Human League and Diana Ross alongside newer acts like Lizzo, Dua Lipa, and Megan Thee Stallion. After all, the ambition is to unite an entire room of revelers. “This mix really is about togetherness,” says Mattel. “It has sounds that are 50 years old mixed with new sounds to create an ambiance that has something for everyone.
