Sugar Coated Lies

Sugar Coated Lies

Ziggy Ramo’s second album unfolds like a series of especially raw diary entries. On opener “Pretty Ugly,” the First Nations singer/rapper cuts down how he looks and sounds before admitting that he—and other men—must be brave enough to work towards self-acceptance. The equally frank “Stressed Out” paints an intimate portrait of isolation and alienation, while “Done to You” is a stark statement of romantic regret. Combining elements of hip-hop, R&B, and indie folk, Ramo moves freely through styles while taking cathartic deep dives into matters of mental health. Yet it’s all quite accessible, aided in part by poignant guest turns from Aotearoa rapper Ladi6, Dutch singer Jantine, and Californian vocalist Vonn. Wergaia/Wemba Wemba singer-songwriter Alice Skye joins Ramo for a brooding duet on the title track, which appeared alongside his screen debut as an actor on the TV series Black Snow. Following up his breakthrough 2020 album Black Thoughts—which he completed in 2015 but first released as an EP due to his concerns about its outspoken themes—Ramo proves that what’s on his mind is universal indeed.
