Never Enough

Never Enough

When the pandemic shut down dance music’s homes—clubs, warehouses, festival fields—Guy and Howard Lawrence felt the loss keenly. As much as the Disclosure brothers found new ways to stay connected with the world via livestreamed sets and production tutorials, their thoughts kept turning to better days as they assembled this EP. Originally released as five individual singles across one week in August 2021, the tracks were born from nostalgia and anticipation, an urge to make music for the moments when club culture could fully open its doors again. “[Imagining] big, sweaty warehouses or [Glastonbury’s after-hours otherworld] Shangri-La,” Guy Lawrence tells Apple Music. “Those moments at Glastonbury where you find about eight mates all at once randomly and you’re like, ‘Oh my god! We’re all here at the same time and my favorite DJ’s playing.’ I’ve always wanted to make a song that I would feel proud to drop at that moment, and ‘Happening’ feels like that to me.” Like “Seduction,” with its nudging rhythms and vivid sparkle, the gently lifting house of “Happening” is indeed precision-tooled for good times. But while Never Enough is an unmistakable celebration of the brothers’ club roots, it’s not a simple exercise in house-and-garage euphoria. Disclosure has always looked beyond the dance floor, constantly searching for new sounds to experiment with. “For most of this EP, the beats began with me and then Howard elevated them—to a whole different genre sometimes,” says Guy. “‘In My Arms’ is a great example. I wrote that with my friend Lxury, who’s an amazing producer, just the two of us rolling out the synth and the beat and just getting the initial idea down. If you give something like that to Howard, he then turns up and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I’ve been listening to gospel church harmonies.’ Getting the balance right—making a techno beat, getting sent gospel harmonies by Howard—you’re trying to figure out this new landscape and this new genre. That’s the most exciting part of the job.”
