Rocket Love

Rocket Love

Bassist Stephan Crump, known for his extensive work with Vijay Iyer, has also earned plaudits with his groups Rhombal and Rosetta Trio, his duo Secret Keeper with Mary Halvorson, the Borderlands Trio with Kris Davis and Eric McPherson, and a trio project with Ingrid Laubrock and Cory Smythe. Rocket Love is his first documented foray in the solo-bass idiom, joining recent solo entries from his bass colleagues Larry Grenadier (The Gleaners) and Jorge Roeder (El Suelo Mío). For Crump, the solo format is conducive to playful rhythmic invention on “Groove for Stacey Abrams” or dramatic bowing on pieces like “What Is The” and “Whoof,” as well as “Lament” parts I and II (the only two tracks to involve any multitracking). But the alert snap of Crump’s pizzicato and the visceral feel of his phrasing are what fuel a troika of canonical jazz pieces: Thelonious Monk’s “Pannonica,” Billy Strayhorn’s “Isfahan,” and the Rodgers & Hart ballad “It Never Entered My Mind.” With the memorable title track, offered on the heels of the percussive “Enough,” Crump also highlights the depth of his own compositional voice.
