Minus One

Minus One

Recorded in five days at their home studio by the London-based duo of Nicholas Wood and Kat Day, The KVB’s third album, Minus One, often sounds like someone has taken studio tapes of Joy Division and remixed them until only ghostly remnants remain. “Passing By” could be Joy Division’s “Transmission” cut down to its studs, with the synth line eventually chasing the hook while mumbled and/or buried vocals wander the catacombs below. Whatever the derivative nature in spots, it’s still deeply felt and powerful, necessary in its own emotionally tortured way. That the duo match these sounds with a visual component in concert also suggests the songs are just one element in the overall mix. Stiff drum machine beats keep the tension taut on the race-to-the-finish of “Live or Die” and create a beautifully mechanical bass-to-drum relationship for “Endless,” where Wood’s lonely moans meet firmer synths buzzing through the action. Everything climaxes with the seven-minute “Dominance/Submission,” where the synths turn kinetic and bounce vigorously off their repetitive notes.
