In his 2012 breakout single “Dear Science”, Victorian rapper Seth Sentry praises researchers for inventions such as the light bulb and the iPod, but laments their inability to create a hoverboard. “I guess Back to the Future was a dick-tease,” he sniffs, before rapping, “I drew a little rough design on a serviette/So now all you have to do is make it work and shit.” It’s down-to-earth humour like this that makes This Was Tomorrow such a compelling debut album. His laidback, deadpan delivery and relatable lyrics are at odds with the self-promoting posturing for which hip-hop is renowned. A waiter for 10 years prior to the success of This Was Tomorrow, Sentry vents on his former occupation in “Thanks for Your Hospitality” (“customers complaining like I give a fuck”) with a storytelling skill that reflects his childhood passion for creative writing.
