Living In Sin - EP

Growing up, Western Sydney rapper Hooligan Hefs spent his weekends at a local parking lot, laying down freestyles while sipping on boxed wine cut with lemonade. Meditations on the“young, dumb, and broke” past he references in “All I Know” makes up much of Living in Sin, a six-track EP underscored by a life of crime, conflict, and, conversely, celebration. The Samoan Chinese MC has garnered a reputation for spirited gutter-rap singles, but here he offers an unfettered view of life in Western Sydney’s Doonside. “I was feeling out prisons, now I’m selling out shows/Forget about greens, I wanted patterns on my clothes/My brother just called me from that jail phone/He just heard my voice playing on the radio,” he raps on “Same Road.” The 22-year-old’s crew, The Hooligans—including HooliganSKINNY and a third, unnamed member who’s currently incarcerated—have been friends since they were teenagers. “Party With Gang,” which features SKINNY, is a booming dedication to the tight-knit squad. Whether he’s harking back to "the things we done to fill our plates" (“Shysty”) or pledging his allegiance once again to the Hooligans (“In & Out”), Hefs’ charismatic irreverence is captivating, especially as he narrates dark matters. “I done it illegal just to pay off my legals/Police still stop me in my vehicle/’Cause they think I'm stashing the deagle.” There’s a lot to think about, but before the record comes to a close, Hefs flips the mood. A frisson of frenetic EDM, “Party Szn” proves that Hefs is both a passionate emoter and a wry winker, as he ends with a timely message: “Yeah, it’s corona season/But we still party like it’s the weekend.”
