SONS—formerly known as Sons of God—rock hard, stay melodic, and praise God with conviction on their debut album, Keep Quiet. The Christian quartet achieves a sound that blends Chevelle's unyielding post-grunge assault with the emotionally volatile edge of Manchester Orchestra. SONS benefit from the distinctive lead vocals of Aaron Newberry, who brings an unusual vulnerability to the heroic role of rock frontman. “Masters of the Flattery” (a portrait of an alienated believer) and the title tune (an invitation to turn away from the dark side) reflect the band’s fondness for contrasting guitar textures and rhythmic variety. SONS sail into atmospheric waters on the luminous “Sea of Glass,” bring britpop keyboard ambiance to “The Devil and I,” and crunch with admirable ferocity on “Under the Sun.” Some tracks here—particularly the anthemic “Doubt”—have real crossover potential. But songs like the socially conscious “Is This a Dry Season or Agnosticism?” suggest the band is interested in something more than mass-appeal hits.
