Pride 2022 (DJ Mix)

“These are some of the gayest songs ever,” River Moon tells Apple Music of her DJ mix for Pride month, dedicated to Black trans women. “I hope this just makes people escape and feel the rhythms—and to feel sexy and fly. It’s the feeling I want everyone to feel all of 2022.” The Cape Town-born and -based artist grew up in NYC before moving home in 2017, where she’s been vocal about how the pandemic has affected spaces for marginalized people—particularly those in the queer, Black community she calls home. Speaking to this, River calls out one track in particular: “Queenie” by FAKA and Angel-Ho. “It captures me as an African, me as a queer person, me as a sexy and fly bitch,“ she says. ”All my friends appeared in the music video. I’m always proud to see everyone like me succeed. The outcasts of the world always win in the end. If it’s not me flying the flag, it should be one of my sisters." River reckons the mix would fit into NYC’s infamous queer BIPOC parties, like Papi Juice and Dick Appointment. Setting the scene with more detail, she describes the sound of the mix: “It’s 5 am. I just got back from playing a long-ass set at the club. I’m tired, but I don’t want the party to end. I started the mix with a track that makes me feel like the end of the party, ‘Time’ by Arca, and ‘How Will I Know’ by Whitney Houston is blended in there. This is the feeling of going home alone, wishing you went home with that someone you were eyeing in the club.”
