Chillinit’s life looks a whole lot different in late 2023 from what it was two years ago, when he released his third album, Family Ties. The Sydney rapper born Blake Turnell is still in the game to bring home the bacon—but he’s a father now, and a husband, so there’s a whole family to feed at the kitchen table. If fatherhood has slowed him down, you mightn’t guess it from 420DNA. His first full-length release in two years shows off a Chillinit still enamored with weed, women, and wordplay. He’s still pushing his bars to their pun-filled limits with line after line of metaphors, references, and disarmingly random pop culture callbacks. There’s lyrical references to NBA players, rappers, and Kardashians, and title mentions, like “Reservoir Dogs”; “Pac Energy” (which references and samples not only 2Pac, but also Nas, Kendrick Lamar, and Lil Wayne, among others); “Jenny,” a J. Lo nod; and “Boys Light Up,” an homage to the classic Australian Crawl track. The 1980 rock song is sampled throughout, and Turnell even wriggles in a mention of lead singer James Reyne: “Make that rain, call me James, Australian Crawl.” But listen closer for fistfuls of hilariously unexpected cultural mentions, such as Drew Carey and his comedy sketch show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, 2003 movie Cheaper by the Dozen and its star Steve Martin, the PGA golf tournament, Scooby-Doo, the card game UNO, and many, many, many more. It doesn’t take the occasional background vocal of Turnell laughing to know he’s having so much fun putting these together. True to its mixtape form, 420DNA darts between deep, satisfying boom-bap, aggressive drill beats, rhythmic R&B, and more. And his flow, in all its forms, grows more refined and confident with each release. “Boom Bap” is a particular highlight, both for its homage to the style itself and the leisurely glide of its verses. “Walk & Drive” is a mixtape high point too, with Turnell and Brisbane producer/rapper Nerve bouncing off one another throughout, even going line by line for about half the track. For the two close friends and longtime collaborators, you can, again, hear just how much they’re loving the moment.
