The Order of Things

The Order of Things

If All That Remains had, on earlier albums, gone strictly for speed, musical weight, and purgation, then their seventh finds them nailing a heavily melodic form of angst. There’s more singing and less screaming, and the passion and musical precision is better defined. The quintet’s patented bone-grinding riffs are now part of the songwriting instead of in place of it. There are smart musical juxtapositions here, too: for example, the cinematic “This Probably Won’t End Well” is deceptively happy. Others (particularly “No Knocks” and “Divide”) are well-wrought cuts rooted in traditional hard rock without irony or nostalgia.
