Despite the fact that Charmaine’s appropriately titled, bravado-packed debut single “BOLD” came out in late 2020 in the thick of the pandemic, little could stop its impact. It announced the Toronto rapper’s arrival in no uncertain terms, and set the stage for her 2021 EP HOOD AVANT-GARDE, which only solidified her status as a star on the rise. “It holds a special place in my heart,” she tells Apple Music of “BOLD.” “I didn’t expect it to reach as many people as it has.” As such, for this special Apple Music Home Session, Charmaine remade the track, along with “DOUBLE DUTCH,” both of which appear on HOOD AVANT-GARDE, with a DIY laptop setup from the comfort of her living room. “It gave me a chance to discover and hear how they sound on something other than the original production,” she says. “It’s obviously a little weird hearing the different beats, but it’s really cool to be able to try new creative approaches.” Here “BOLD” gets a lo-fi funk makeover, while “DOUBLE DUTCH” scuffs a little gloss of the original for the kind of live-sounding track you could imagine hearing at a sweaty basement party. The pandemic “pushed me to keep thinking outside the box,” she says. “When you’re locked inside and unable to really do anything, it challenges you to find ways of keeping your creativity flowing.”
